C4 Challenge Ropes Course
Project Adventure says, "a challenge ropes course is a series of individual and group physical challenges that require a combination of teamwork skills and individual commitment. Using rope, cables, and wood, courses are constructed outdoors in trees (or telephone poles) and indoors in gymnasiums." At C4, participants are offered a variety of high and low ropes course challenges - or "elements," as we call them. The close to the ground low elements provide an opportunity to attempt something new while building trust and developing a keener awareness and connection with your fellow participants and C4 facilitators. The nature of the low elements encourages creative problem-solving, positive interaction and risk taking. This helps participants see that they are capable of things they never thought possible. Low elements prepare you for the high elements.
While the potential for injury on low elements may appear to be small, it may be greater than on high elements. Most low elements require some type of spotting - i.e. using other group members to protect individuals from falls or slips while doing the challenge. We teach participants specific spotting techniques as a set of skills in themselves. Demonstrating attention and effective spotting, using appropriate commands and constant vigilance are important tools for minimizing the accident potential. Low elements are usually combined with "initiatives" - group problem solving tasks - that are chosen to accomplish the desired objectives and suit the physical and mental abilities of each group.
High elements take participants off the ground, up on rocks or up into trees with safety systems including belay lines, harnesses and helmets. You're offered an opportunity to discover the meaning of individual and team choice, commitment, collaboration, courage and compassion in an up close and personal manner. The high elements offer a potent - often adrenalin infused - experience of facing apparently impossible tasks and finding the inner resources to move through and beyond one's fears and preconceived beliefs to a deeper appreciation and awareness of self and teammate.
